CBD for Obesity

An estimated 160 million Americans suffer from Obesity.

Nearly three-quarters of American men and more than 60% of women are obese or overweight. There are also major challenges for America’s children – nearly 30% of boys and girls under age 20 are either obese or overweight, up from 19% in 1980. Since obesity is associated with many diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, and some types of cancer, the rapid increase in obesity is a major health burden.

How CBD Works To Relieve Obesity

When we talk about obesity and cannabis it is found that the consumption of cannabis (usually smoking) relates to weight gain. This is because THC (one compound found within the plant) stimulates the appetite. A common misconception is that CBD will do the same, but studies are
finding out this is not true; in fact, the opposite. Within us we have what is called an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Our ECS works like a messenger that regulates many functions of our bodies. In addition to anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties, it is said CBD will increase
the activity of mitochondria, in theory burning more calories.

In 2016, a study published in the scientific journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry; Korean researchers studied the effects of CBD on preadipocytes (immature fat cells). The study showed CBD to have these three effects:

  1. Stimulate genes and proteins that enhance the breakdown and oxidation of fat.

  2. Increase the number and activity of mitochondria (which increases the body’s ability to burn calories).

  3. Decrease the expression of proteins involved in lipogenesis (fat cell generation).

Research has found CBD causes a “fat browning” effect; the conversion of white fat cells into brown (beige) cells. CBD plays dual modulatory roles by inducing the brown-like phenotype as well as promoting lipid metabolism. Thus, CBD may be explored as a potentially promising therapeutic agent for the prevention of obesity.

Dosing Thoughts

Research studies have used doses from 15mg to as high as 600mg. Typical CBD supplements provide 20mg to 25mg. When taking CBD for obesity, dosing can vary widely depending on the severity of the symptoms you are experiencing. One goal to consider is to use CBD to supplement or possibly replace pharmaceuticals you might be taking. CBD is an all-natural alternative that does not build up in your system and cannot be overdose.

It is important to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any supplement program. Most prescribed medications cannot and should not be stopped all at once.

It has been suggested to start with a dose of 10mg to 15mg of CBD twice a day. After a few days, you may want to reduce prescribed meds incrementally while increasing your CBD dosage the following day. Steps of 10mg are suggested to help monitor changes. Monitor your symptoms; be aware of how you feel. Don’t hurry the process. Wait 2 to 3 days between changes. This will allow you to determine the dosing that your body requires to meet your goals, while documenting how your medications interact.
