CBD for PTSD

PTSD affects around 8 million Americans today.

PTSD or (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is most commonly found in, but not limited to military veterans who have experienced a traumatizing incident. It can cause flashbacks, extreme anxiety and fear, loss of interest in activities you once loved and can affect your quality of life substantially. People that have been diagnosed with PTSD at some point in their life have a greater risk of committing suicide. Approximately 27% of those who had been diagnosed have attempted to commit suicide. The part of the brain affected by PTSD is the Hippocampus. The Hippocampus mostly controls memory function and its ability to distinguish past versus present. It has also been shown that people with lower Hippocampal volume are more susceptible to developing PTSD. This could be a reason traumatic events in undeveloped adolescents can be carried on to adulthood.

Within our bodies we have what’s called an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Our ECS is essentially an internal messenger that regulates many functions. Our ECS is mainly made up of CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are associated with the nervous system and the CB2 receptors are primarily found in our immune system, with a large concentration of them in the spleen and gastrointestinal system. CBD has a few distinguishing features that people rave about, some of them being aid in sleep, anti-anxiety, and a sense of overall well being. These are all things that you may struggle with if you are living with PTSD. CBD has also been shown to communicate with that CB1 receptor activating the release of serotonin within the brain. This is one of the main functions within SNRI anti-depressants.

It is important to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any supplement program. Most prescribed medications cannot and should not be stopped all at once.

It has been suggested to start with a dose of 10mg to 15mg of CBD twice a day. After a few days, you may want to reduce prescribed meds incrementally while increasing your CBD dosage the following day. Steps of 10mg are suggested to help monitor changes. Monitor your symptoms; be aware of how you feel. Don’t hurry the process. Wait 2 to 3 days between changes. This will allow you to determine the dosing that your body requires to meet your goals, while documenting how your medications interact.
