Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

CBD and TBI

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) accounts for approximately 10 million deaths and/or hospitalizations annually in the world.

With half of all traumatic deaths in the U.S. from TBI, most head injuries are considered mild and most never receive medical attention. TBI can be triggered by concussions related to falls, hard-hitting contact sports, car accidents, even stab wounds or gunshots. Most professional sports organizations have been fighting to allow CBD use due to the aggressive nature of their events. Many youth sports programs are being modified to help lower the risk of TBI occurrences and many professional programs have protocols in place to evaluate players sustaining excessive hits to the head and body during play. Unfortunately the results of many smaller, unrelated injuries can result in TBI stress greater than one profound occurrence.

How CBD Works To Relieve Traumatic Brain Injury

TBI, like a stroke, involves an interruption of cerebral blood flow and destroys brain tissue. This causes a complex sequence of molecular events that can result in a massive release of glutamate and reactive oxygen free radicals as an inflammatory result. These compounds, in turn, lead to swollen brain tissue, blood-brain barrier breakdown, swollen tissue, and cell death.
This is where our body’s own Endocannabinoid System (ECS) steps in. The ECS regulates many physiological processes such as cerebral blood flow, inflammation and neuroplasticity. The ECS is the messenger system in the body. The system regulates many functions. CBD is a super cannabinoid that activates receptors to help manage inflammation, and aid in the effects of TBI.
CBD tends to manipulate our natural cannabinoid receptors to reduce glutamate release and promote cell repair. It is thought that it might also protect the blood-brain barrier from breakdown.
Research is new, but people already using CBD for TBI symptoms stand as living proof, through their testimonials, that CBD is capable of providing a reduction in inflammation and related pain.

Dosing Thoughts

Research studies have used doses from 15mg to as high as 600mg. Typical CBD supplements provide 20mg to 25mg. When taking CBD for inflammation, dosing can vary widely depending on the severity of the symptoms you are experiencing. One goal to consider is to use CBD to supplement or possibly replace pharmaceuticals you might be taking. CBD is an all-natural alternative that does not build up in your system and cannot be overdosed.

May we suggest trying one of our CUBED Hemp based CBD Tinctures. Available in 1200mg or 3600mg concentrations, mixed with our exclusive Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Italy or NYS-sourced sunflower seed oil. Our Graduated Sprayer makes it simple to dose properly.

It is important to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any supplement program. Many prescribed medications cannot and should not be stopped all at once.

It has been suggested to start with a dose of 10mg to 15mg of CBD twice a day. After a few days, you may want to reduce prescribed (or over-the-counter) medications incrementally while increasing your CBD dosage the following day. Steps of 10mg are suggested to help monitor changes. Monitor your symptoms; be aware of how you feel. Don’t hurry the process. Wait 2 to 3 days between changes. This will allow you to determine the dosing that your body requires to meet your goals, while documenting how your medications interact.
